Email Marketing Automation Basics: What to Build Before Anything Fancy
Before investing in advanced segmentation, AI-personalized send times, or predictive send tools, four foundational automations do most of the work for a small e-commerce brand. Get these four live and tested before spending time on anything more advanced.
Welcome Sequence
Triggered on signup, introducing the brand and typically including a first-purchase incentive. This is usually the highest-converting email a brand sends, and the one most often left as a single generic message instead of a short sequence. A 2-3 email welcome sequence, brand story, then social proof, then a nudge with an incentive, consistently outperforms one email doing all three jobs at once.
Abandoned Cart
Triggered when a cart is left without completing checkout. Even a simple two-email sequence recovers meaningful revenue that would otherwise be lost entirely. The first email is a reminder, sent within a few hours; the second, sent a day or two later, is where an incentive earns its keep if margin allows one.
Post-Purchase
Covered in more depth in our retention flow guide, this sequence turns a single sale into an ongoing relationship instead of a one-time transaction. It’s the flow most likely to move your actual repeat-purchase rate, which is why it deserves its own dedicated build rather than being an afterthought inside a general newsletter.
Win-Back
Triggered when a previously active customer goes quiet for a defined period. A well-timed win-back email costs almost nothing to send and can recover customers who would otherwise churn silently. The trigger window should be based on your own typical repurchase timing, not a generic 90-day default.
How RevenueTHESIS Approaches This
These four flows are usually one of the first things reviewed in a SIGNAL Diagnostic, because they’re high-leverage and often half-built: a welcome email exists but isn’t a sequence, or abandoned cart exists but was never tested end-to-end. Fixing what’s already there is frequently faster than it sounds, and it’s the kind of system-building work that keeps paying off without ongoing ad spend.
